The Tempest continued…

Directed by John Bell for Bell Shakespeare, this was the final production that John directed for Bell in his role as Artistic Director. John and I worked on this design for over 6 months, tossing around ideas, and stripping things back, eventually arriving at an essential space - a circular rake of “torn paper”, and 2 large torn paper curtains that could be blown in the air to create the storm, pulled across the stage to take us to another location or pulled back to reveal The Tempest’s magic. We embraced theatrical story telling, adding or taking away a few elements to change character and relying on Shakespeare to inform us with his words. Some of this experience formed part of my doctoral thesis, the whole company welcomed the idea and offered me many of their own personal insights throughout rehearsal and during the season. I will be forever grateful.
